February 13, 2017: 10:00am - 11:00am

He had just turned in his last paper and they hadn't discussed in detail his next one, so we pulled up the syllabus and started brainstorming possible media topics. He really likes Star Wars, so we chatted about ways those movies address social issues (how many (few) women and black characters there are, the fact that there are no explicitly confirmed gay characters), and how they tie into the current cultural moment (who can die in movies? how do they address nostalgia? technological developments? are they really about WWII). After they discuss the project more in class today, he'll choose a topic, and when he meets with Caitlin Wednesday, they'll develop the ideas further.

Date:

February 20, 2017: 10:00am - 11:00am

We completed the ENC journal for this week, and then discussed topic ideas for the upcoming paper. We brainstormed until we found a topic he was interested in, then created a loose thesis and started to construct an outline with ideas that would support the thesis. We finally talked about him checking in with the professor to ensure the topic wasn't too broad, and how to narrow it if need be. Keep brainstorming ideas for the outline/paper to back up the thesis, and check in with professor.

Date:

February 22, 2017: 10:00am - 10:30am

We brainstormed ideas for the next paper, and then began taking notes on possible ways to approach the selected topics to fit the assignment. We talked through how to write up the proposal for class (as well as how to narrow the topic, should the professor suggest that). Write the proposal and come back with professor feedback.

Wrote process memo for previous paper. Discussed student's writing process.

Date:

April 10, 2017: 10:00am - 11:00am

He had a topic and a genre for his satire paper: student athletes and an Onion article, so we began by looking at Onion articles to get a feel for the genre. He wrote a title and started a list of topics he wanted to cover, things he felt people either believed or needed to know about student athletes. We read some examples and noticed that they tend to be detailed, specific, and almost reasonable except for where they become exaggerated or have one detail flipped. He plans to try to have a full page written by his Wednesday meeting so they can talk about what's working well and what's giving him a hard time.

Date:

April 24, 2017: 10:00am - 11:00am

We reviewed his two existing Onion articles for his satire project and brainstormed some other places to expand them. We also pulled up the Onion to identify some other styles of article he could write, and he started to draft a third article using the "invention" category we noticed they frequently feature. He will check in with his instructor today, and then work on the fourth idea we created--describing all the reasons athletes are qualified for jobs while identifying them as "underqualified".

Began to work on first draft of paper, but decided to work on journal instead after frustration came to a head about the paper. We went through and read an assigned reading about rhetoric and rhetorical situations. We discussed what concepts meant (ie 5 cannons, 3 appeals, etc). We discussed how they can be seen in everyday life. He crafted a journal response. Try to get content about the paper on the page, even if it isn't anything that he will even keep. Try to jumpstart writing by putting anything that comes to mind on the page, and we can go through it together to make sense of it and continue from there.

Went over course policies as well as goals statement and calendar. Discussed upcoming assignment and brainstormed ideas, as well as wrote basics for the rough draft.

January 25, 2017: 12:00pm - 12:30pm

Reworked rough draft using teacher comments. Discussed intro paragraph and how to rework to better drive the argument of the paper. Discussed other ideas for artifacts to use in paper. Discussed changing the scope of the paper to focus in on African-Americans and the dystopia in America, instead of all minorties in America and their struggles in a dystopian America. Find two other artifacts that can be used (such as the TV show discussed in session) with the new direction of the paper.

Date:

February 1, 2017: 12:00pm - 12:30pm

Revised essay and discussed how to add in other rhetorical elements for analysis. Compose based on discussion during session. Bring teacher comments to next session.

Date:

February 8, 2017: 12:00pm - 12:30pm

Discussed second paper requirements, and potential topic ideas. Talked through how to approach topics he was interested in writing about in relation to the assigned topic. Suggested asking professor for clarity on relatively vague/open-ended topic, and to ask if what we had discussed during our session would work for the professor. If professor approves topic, find sources. If not, brainstorm new topic.

Date:

February 15, 2017: 12:00pm - 12:30pm

Attempted to start and finish the annotated bibliography and progress report/finalized research question. Based on instructor feedback, he needed to change the question, but his attempts to meet with the professor to do so had not resulted in a meeting, so he was unsure what to do. We revised his question to the best of our ability, created a loose outline, and began looking up sources. I also advised emailing the professor to seek guidance about how to go about conducting research and creating an annotated bibliography when the research question still needed revision (with professor guidance, as per the instructor's feedback). Try to finish research and wait to hear from professor.

Date:

February 22, 2017: 12:00pm - 12:30pm

Began constructing the intro paragraph and thesis for paper 2. Worked primarily on constructing a thesis that operates as an appropriate guide for the paper, as well as making strong assertions for the research paper instead of qualified/not confident assertions. Complete the intro (and possibly the first paragraph that gives background/sets up the issue) before session with Maryanna.

Date:

March 1, 2017: 12:00pm - 12:30pm

We discussed what he already has written, which was the intro and opening 2 paragraphs. We discussed where and how to add in and cite his sources, we reorganized some of the paragraphs and broke down super lengthy paragraphs into smaller chunks. Once we did that, we talked about how essays can be broken down into mini-paragraphs that each have an intro, opinion, support, and conclusion, which I think helped him to get less overwhelmed and stressed about the paper. We tried to implement it, but he was not in a headspace that would be conducive to doing it, so we just talked about how he could do it based on his outline before his appointment with Maryanna on Friday. This session was primarily spent discussing the paper and how to approach it, but I think it was effective since he came to the  session overwhelmed and not able to put ideas on the page, and left the session less stressed out and with clear ideas of how to approach writing the rest of the paper. Write mini-paragraphs to show Maryanna before next session.

Date:

March 8, 2017: 12:00pm - 12:30pm

Added in citations and quotes, and finished sections that needed more added in. Rearranged paragraphs to create more cohesive argument. Keep working over break. Read aloud and have others read it over.

Date:

March 22, 2017: 12:00pm - 12:30pm

Went through assignment sheet for the final project, ensuring that the parameters and requirements were understood. We then brainstormed ideas on how to bring the research from his paper into new genres. Continue brainstorming and begin composing proposal.

Date:

March 29, 2017: 12:00pm - 12:30pm

Worked on project proposal and fleshed out ideas for project and how they connected to previous paper's argument.

Date:

January 20, 2017: 10:30am - 11:00am

(Naseir was 30 minutes late to his scheduled appointment, stating his class in Bellamy did not finish until 10, so he couldn't make it in time. I discussed with Maryanna, who emailed Lauren and began working it out. It is resolved now)

We discussed his upcoming rough draft and what the assignment asked of him, then we brainstormed ideas and tried to get as many details to write about as possible.

Brainstorm more ideas or begin writing rough draft to work on in next session

Discussed how to create the proposal. Create proposal and submit. Bring instructor feedback to next session.

Date:

March 1, 2017: 10:30am - 11:00am

The student came in 20 minutes late, and then stated he had nothing to work on today, and did not have any of his work with him. When asked about his paper, he avoided the questions for a while until I began asking more pointed questions (and it was clear he would not leave early). We eventually discussed his paper's direction and the kind of research he needs to add in to bolster his argument. I told him to bring in all of his instructor's feedback and any work he had already completed with him to the next meeting. Talk with professor in conference and bring all his work with him.

Date:

March 8, 2017: 10:30am - 11:00am

Discussed paper and created an outline and basic idea for how to approach it. Keep working over spring break.

Date:

March 22, 2017: 10:30am - 11:00am

Discussed where he was already with the paper, and where he needs to go. Talked about outline and how to utilize research, as well as how to incorporate personal anecdotes. Must bring in first draft (first 500 words) to next appointment.

Date:

March 29, 2017: 10:30am - 11:00am

The student came in with about 7 minutes left of the appointment, stating that he had been in the bathroom and that was why he could not come in (I did not explore the reason further because if it was true I didn't want details, and because his treatment of these appointments thus far leads me to believe it was likely just an excuse). Last appointment I told him to bring in a copy of his work thus far, and he came in without it, saying that they work-shopped in class and the teacher collected it. I told him to email a copy to himself so he can access it for our next appointment, and if he does not bring anything in for the next appointment I will be asking him to leave and marking the appointment as missed.  We worked on discussing how to conclude the paper and how to add in citations from his research. However, since he has not brought in a paper for us to go over, I could not give very specific feedback or guidance since I don't know what he has written or what he plans to use from his sources. Write conclusion and add in sources and citations. BRING IN PAPER TO NEXT SESSION. Show up on time to next session. Bring feedback if returned.

We went through the policy sheet briefly, and then began working on her assignment. We discussed the assignment and what was being asked of her, then began thinking of examples or topics she could write about. Once we had a few ideas, we talked about how to structure a paper using each set of ideas and what kinds of examples she could use and discuss from each. We settled on a topic and then discussed it more in depth. We briefly discussed a thesis before the session ended. Finish thesis and begin writing rough draft/.

We finished the 3 T's and a Thesis assignments in this session. Each paragraph we stopped and reflected on what was being said, summarized it to the side, and talked about how it connected to the previous paragraphs. Submit assignments. Bring in more readings she would like to do together in order to expand vocab and be more comfortable with reading/writing.

He had some discussion board posts to write but forgot his book, so he took his best guess at some answers and saved them as word documents to check against the book when he gets back to it. He also looked ahead to the next discussion post. We read some of the article for that, talked about the main point, and brainstormed some things he could write down later.

He started on his discussion board posts--he used reading strategies like making a prediction and checking headers to quickly skim the articles to find the information he needed to write the first post, and then did the same for the second post.
