I worked in the Williams Digital Studio as a consultant this semester for the first time. It was an incredibly rewarding experience that forced me to keep up with my abilities to work and compose digitally, and it helped me to be able to vocalize how to do something both using technical jargon and easy-to-understand speech for the less technologically literate. I primarily helped students identify what kinds of programs to use based on their needs and abilities, or I helped run interference as they worked and hit a wall and weren't sure how best to proceed.

Unfortunately, due to the workshop nature of sessions and the set up of the space allowing for students to simply pop in when they need help and leave once they're finished, I do not have copies of any work I aided in the composition or editing thereof. Most of the work I did involved student portfolios and explaining how to set up a website, or how to compose an advertisement/magazine/poster in InDesign/Photoshop, or how to edit video in iMovie or Movie Maker. Most students came in with very specific problems that we worked through with them and then they could leave, as it was generally a situation where they knew generally what they were doing it and how, but were stuck in the process because of this one issue they were having. A good handful of times I had students come in looking for a tutorial on the basics of a program (generally InDesign, Photoshop, or Illustrator), so I would show them the basics and let them play around until they were comfortable. I had a few students who came in several times to get several tutorials just to expand their knowledge of the software.  Most students though, came in with specific projects and even more specific problems.

As far as editing is concerned, most of what I did involved design principles and reminding the student of both their audience and how they should be composing for them, as well as the affordances and constraints of the platform they were composing within.
